Google claims you don't need a college degree anymore. A claim similar to Tam Cook of Apple.

Disclaimer: Currently I am employed by Microsoft, but my views and thoughts are still my own. The reason I joined Microsoft was, the work Microsoft have been doing for last couple of years in Open Source Space. Today I am a advocate for Open Source representing Microsoft.

According to Google, you will not need anymore. All you need is the certifications provided by Google. In an earlier post I wrote about Tim Cook from Apple, claiming something similar.

My stance has not changed on college. I do agree, I might not be using the courses I had in college. Most of the knowledge I have is either self thought or from the experience. But college still had a big place in my education.

For most people it is first in the academic world they learn how to think critically, to question the information provided. It is were knowing my source was most important.

For example, it was not just enough to put Wikipedia at the bottom of the report, I had to cite each and every fact I got from each and every source. This thought me to question the validity of each and every source I use, but it is still subject to my judgement.

To be as objective as possible, in academia you have something called peer-reviews. That is one of things lacking in the modern Internet. We have forgotten, once opinion is not objective. My guess is, this might be one of the reason for the rise of fake new.

Today I do try to follow the same practice when I am blogging. My rule of thumb is, unless I cite a source for a fact, it is just my opinion.

I think, it is good we have options available for those who don't want ar can have academic eduction. But tech giants like Apple and Google, should not under mine the learning one get in an academic environment, by just being part of it.
